This week in Science we will be looking at and making different models of the Earth's structure. We will identify the major layers of the Earth and explore the idea that the theory of plate tectonics accounts for important features of Earth's surface and major geologic events.

Important vocabulary (including page number from the Science text book):

Core (pg. 191)

Crust (pg. 191)

Mantle (pg. 191)

Lithosphere (pg. 191)

Asthenosphere (pg. 191)

Continental drift (pg. 193)

Sea-Floor Spreading (pg. 196)

Plate Tectonics (pg. 199)

Tectonic Plate (pg. 199)

Folding (pg. 205)

This week we are finishing up chapter 4, Material Resources. We have talked about being good stewards of the earth and its resources. We looked at Genesis 1:26 and discussed how God has entrusted mankind to care for and govern the earth in a responsible manner. We have discussed such topics as conservation, recycling, and reusing. There will be a short quiz about Material Resources on Wednesday. If you would like to review the powerpoint, you may find it here: Earth's Resources Power Point. There is much more information on the Power Point than will be on the quiz. Use the Directed Reading sheets for each section to help you study. The quiz will focus on renewable and nonrenewable resources as well as resources used to make common objects (both from the earth and living things), conservation, and the cost of material resources.

Later in the week, we will begin Chapter 5 as we learn about Energy Resources

On Tuesday, we spent some time talking about the School-wide Learning Results as well as work habits and attitudes. Students took time for self-reflection and chose an area to focus on this quarter. We will be working together to set individual, measurable goals for improvement in those areas. We will be focusing as a class on being Faithful Stewards as we learn about the earth's resources. We will also be practicing being Proficient Collaborators as we listen to each other and connect our ideas to what others have said.

This week we will be reading through chapter 4 of the Earth Science Textbook. This chapter is on Earth's Resources. Students will be completing a directed reading activity for each section. Students will have time to work on it in class with a small group, but will be responsible for finishing the reading and worksheet at home if it is not completed at school.
